Marine water maker for boat 20m3pd — Oman
Design points of the case:
We designed and built two compact marine water makers for vessels under construction at Oman and Turkey shipyards. Each marine water maker produces 20 cubic meters of fresh water daily, converting seawater into drinking-quality water for crew use.
To fit through narrow cabin entrances, the system was split into two modular units:
1.Pre-filtration Module
Three-stage filtration (bag filter → 5-micron filter → 1-micron filter)
Mounted on a single frame for easy installation.
2.Reverse Osmosis (RO) Module
Includes a high-pressure pump, two 8040 RO membranes, and controls.
Housed on a separate frame for flexible placement.
This modular design simplifies installation and maintenance, as each unit can operate independently while ensuring reliable freshwater supply at sea.
To ensure longevity in marine environments, the pre-filtration housing and low-pressure pipes are crafted from corrosion-resistant UPVC. Meanwhile, high-pressure components are made from SUS316L stainless steel, prioritizing durability. Finally, the entire system’s compact design ensures it fits perfectly on ships or in other space-constrained locations.

Process Flow:
Feed water pump → Sand filter → Anti-scalant dosing → Security filter → High pressure pump → RO system → Chemical cleaning device
Component Name | Function Description |
Feed Water Pump | Responsible for drawing seawater into the system, serving as the starting point of the entire process. |
Sand Filter | Removes large particles (e.g., sediment, suspended solids) from seawater to protect downstream equipment from wear or blockage. |
Anti-scalant Dosing Device | Adds chemical anti-scalants to seawater to prevent salt scaling on the reverse osmosis membrane surface, extending membrane life. |
Security Filter | Further removes fine particles (e.g., impurities larger than 5 microns) from seawater to ensure clean water enters the reverse osmosis system. |
High-Pressure Pump | Provides the necessary high pressure (typically 6-8 MPa) for the reverse osmosis system, enabling seawater to pass through the reverse osmosis membrane. |
RO (Reverse Osmosis) System | Core component that removes salts, organic matter, and microorganisms from seawater through selective membrane permeability, producing freshwater. |
Chemical Cleaning Device | Used for periodic cleaning of the reverse osmosis membrane to remove pollutants (e.g., scaling, organic deposits) and restore membrane flux, maintaining system performance. |
